Italy 2004

Cinque Terre was one of my most favorite places ever.  I spent over a week walking between the five villages and swimming in the Mediterranean.

Florence was cool, but you’ll notice in most pictures of the David, the tourists are cropped out.  Definitely borders on over touristed in the summer…

I was able to spend some time on the shores of Lake Como and cool down a bit.

Italian food does not dissappoint.

A trip to Rome and the Vatican is a must for Italy.

I stayed in Pisa for a night, and although I didn’t take this photograph, the owner of my accommodation did.

I toured Pompeii.

The Czech Republic 2004

After spending a short time in Slovenia, it was off to Vienna for a quick visit via train before heading to the Czech Republic.

Interesting that I took these photos with a Konica Minolta digital camera – perhaps a foreshadowing of the over ten years I would spend working at Konica Minolta from 2012 on.  Back in 2004, my handy cell phone was the latest technology:

My first mission in the Czech Republic was to meet up with my long-time family friend, Mark Doell from California and his Czech fiance, Olli.

They showed us around their hometown.  I really enjoyed České Budějovice.

The Czech food was hearty, affordable, and filling!

Typical delicious fare:

The next stop was the capital, Prague.  I had visited a year after independence from the Soviet Union when Czechoslovakia was still one country.  This return visit so many many more tourists.  The word is out.

I think this church in the heart of Prague has a very interesting quality to it.  It sort of reminds me of the home of a certain Disney queen.

No visit to Prague is complete without a visit to the castle overlooking the city.

Or The Prague astronomical clock.

Although there are many marvels from previous centuries in Prague, I really enjoyed the huge crawling babies an artist installed on the side of this Soviet-era radio and lookout tower.

Finally, I enjoyed spending time with the locals, especially this nut head.

Belgium 2004

I was finished with some family business, hadn’t been to Europe for years, and was free to go exploring.  But more importantly, I was going to journey to the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece to work with a YWAM outreach team.  Belgium was my first stop.

When I was finally on my way and it all set it that I would be on the road for another awesome adventure, I was filled with joy!

Belgium

The buildings and architecture seemed like something out of a steampunk dream.

Belgium-5I was impressed with the intricate stonework on this church entry arch.

You can visit Belgium without spending time with the Manneken Pis.   It is actually the best-known symbol of the people of Brussels and illustrates their humor.  There are many legends about the little guy, and one said he was awoken by a fire and was able to put out the fire with his pee, helping stop the king’s castle from burning down.

A quick visit to the museum of music rounded out my short stay.

Greece and Olympic Outreach 2004

I finally arrived at Athens, Greece, home of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games!

I would be assisting Pat at In The Bible along with YWAM (Youth With A Mission) students and leaders from around the world to help reach out to visitors and locals with the Good News! Here’s the entire group:

One of the things I LOVE about the Olympics is that the whole world comes together to celebrate sport and the human spirit. The atmosphere is so electric, and people are always there to have a good time, not to fight or cause problems. I met this team from Iraq and they were incredible people, so happy to be in Greece to cheer on their countrymen in the games. We talked and joked, and never even brought up the fact that the US war in Iraq had just started the year pervious and was still ongoing.

I was given the opportunity to use some of my training in audio production to help run sound for open-air concerts.

Some teams would be out performing dramas on the street while others would be helping local churches or performing musicically. Here we are getting ready to put on a show.

This team from Russia helped with street evangelism.

I made great friends that I’m still in contact with almost 20 years later. Here my buddy Gilbert sports his new hair cut!

We were camped out at a small preschool during the outreach. Night time worship was enjoyed when we weren’t out performing.

We also got to attend quite a few sporting events. As long as you aren’t super picky about what sports you want to see, you can catch all kinds of events very cheap or even free!

Not only did I get to meet so many cool people, share the gospel through a variety media, but I felt I was part of something larger. Here I run sound for an all-female Christian heavy metal band. We would host concerts on most nights and then local pastors would give a message and offer people to come forward to receive forgiveness of their sins through Jesus Christ who died for you so that you could have the assurance that you would live forever with Him.

With all that running around in the summer heat, we had to make sure we were keeping our clothes extra clean using Barf! 😊
